Following Miss California’s homophobic faux-pas at last weekend’s Miss USA pageant, I’m sure many of you are done with beauty contents altogether (if you weren’t already). Her controversial answer to Perez Hilton’s question on same-sex marriage epitomised how out-of-date such competitions are.
The Alternative Miss World pageant, due to be held at London’s Roundhouse on the 2nd May, could however, change your mind. Inspired by canine contest, Crufts, Alternative Miss World unites 20 of the least inhibited exhibitionists, that would make Beth Ditto seem like a wall-flower, for a wild night of cross-dressing, debauchery and high-energy, with a bit of nudity thrown in for good measure!
Competitors will be adding their own unique spin on traditional categories such as Eveningwear, Daywear and Swimwear. They will be judged by top creatives and extroverts including fuscia-haired Zandra Rhodes, designer Celia Birtwell and part movie-maker, part Celebrity Big Brother flasher Ken Russell.
Providing the icing on the glitzy cake will be hosts Andrew Logan and the outrageously outspoken Ruby Wax.
Tickets for the extravagant pageant are priced between £27.50 and £50 and are available from the Roundhouse Box Office.
