Following a flurry of speculation over the past year, it has been confirmed that Carol Ann Duffy is the new Poet Laureate in the UK, succeeding Andrew Motion who has held the title for the last 10 years.
Aside from a mixed response from people who either loved or hated her frank and contemporary poetry at school, what is most notable about this appointment, is that despite some of poetry’s most important figures being women, she is the first ever woman to hold the title.

There's an interesting article in The Times today about David Cameron's lack of women in the Conservative Party. Three years ago, Cameron promised that he would "end the scandal of under-representation of
women in the party", and now, The Times point out that only 69 of the 331 prospective Tory parliamentary candidates are women.

During the Miss USA pageant, Miss California said that she felt marriage should be between a man and a woman - no offense! Perez Hilton wasn't too pleased with her - he called her a dumb bitch. I rarely agree with Perez, but on this one, we're in agreement. Miss California went on the Today Show to defend her statement, and she didn't do that great of a job.

The Associated Press is reporting that famed British mathematician and physicist, Stephen Hawking, was rushed to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge late Monday. Hawking has been ill for several weeks and is currently undergoing tests.

So, last night was the Miss USA beauty pageant, and I'm sure you were all watching.
Perez Hilton was a judge. Miss California was up on stage, it was her turn to be asked a question by one of the judges, and the named she picked out of the bowl of judged was, of course, Perez Hilton.
