Reclaiming the F Word by Catherine Redfern and Kristin Aune is published by Zed Books this month and is a book I’ve been looking forward to for some time. As a contributor to The F Word for a number of years when Re...

‘Pupils aged 11 debate rape, pornography and prostitution’ – it’s certainly the sort of headline you can guarantee will have Middle England keeling over with rage. This week, the Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph were reporting that ‘irresponsible’ and ‘controversial’ education packs produced by Rape Crisis in Buckinghamshire – dealing with issu...

When the news headlines announced that next week an abortion advert will be airing on the UK's Channel 4, I suspected most people's minds start resembling the Daily Mail. For the past month we’ve been incensed about the lack of coverage involving women and the general election. Yes, you’d be forgiven for thinking that women didn’t have much to do with this politics business, unless of course we’re talking about the party leaders’ wives, whose sartorial choices have been picked over incessantly.

Normally, when the media and convservatives freak out about children “growing up to fast” or the “sexulization of teens”, I tell them to calm down and take a cold shower. The idea that teenagers are sexual beings still freaks people out, especially when the teenagers at hand are female. (Which means that they're usually “slutty” or “need help”.)
