OMG, you guys...Adam Lambert is totally gay! Aaaaaaaaaaand snore.
First of all, is anyone really surprised? I never even watched American Idol and I’m not surprised.
Secondly, I am so over Celebrity Sexuality Mania. Why is Supposedly-Straight-What’s-Her-Name holding hands with an unidentified woman? Is Macho-Mister-So-and-So secretly sucking cock in back alleys?
I. Don't. Give a shit.
You know why? Because the fact that a person’s sexual identity (or the mystery over such) is still scandal-worthy is ridiculous.
If you’re gay—awesome. I myself swing both ways, and that’s awesome too.
Lambert himself says, “I’m proud of my sexuality. I embrace it. It’s just another part of me [But] I’m trying to be a singer, not a civil rights leader.”
And that’s what all the scandal is really about, isn’t it? If he’s gay he should stand up and add his voice to the movement. If he’s not secretly ashamed of being gay he should declare himself.
Despite what Perez Hilton and his loyal minions may say, secrecy does not necessarily imply shame. Especially for celebrities who’s rights to privacy are practically nonexistent. Maybe secrecy means not wanting the entire country all up in your personal, private business. Or not wanting your music or your films or whatever to be judged (whether for good or bad) through the filter of your sexuality.
If you want to live out loud with your sexuality on your sleeve that’s fabulous. But not everyone is built that way. You can embrace who you are without making it a huge deal. And you shouldn’t be hounded for wanting to maintain your personal privacy or for not wanting to sensationalize something you consider to be just another part of yourself like whether you’re right or left handed.
It implies that one is a “bad gay” in the same way women who don’t hold to traditional feminist ideology are still called “bad feminists”, and as with feminism it’s counterproductive to a movement that needs, more than ever, internal unity and understanding.
Continuing to sensationalize an issue (Hey, guess what? Some people are gay.) that should be accepted as a natural fact of life is ridiculous, and I, for one, am done with it.
So, Adam Lambert is gay. Great. I can’t wait for the day when that statement is the equivalent of saying, “Adam Lambert has blue eyes.” Just an accepted fact of life that no one really gives a shit about outside of a particular personal preference for blue eyes.
