During the Miss USA pageant, Miss California said that she felt marriage should be between a man and a woman - no offense! Perez Hilton wasn't too pleased with her - he called her a dumb bitch. I rarely agree with Perez, but on this one, we're in agreement. Miss California went on the Today Show to defend her statement, and she didn't do that great of a job.
Miss California didn't win the pageant, she was first runner up. Donald Trump, the organizer of the pageant, said in an interview that the remark "probably" cost her the crown. And it should have.
Regardless of her personal view on same sex marriage, Perez Hilton was correct: her answer was undiplomatic and poorly stated.
Despite losing the crown and receiving criticism from all sides, Miss California claims she wouldn't change a thing she said. Check out the video, and fast forward to 6:45 for Miss California's comments:
Viewers watching the Today Show video will notice they played a brief clip of Barack Obama saying during the Presidential Election "I believe that marriage should be between a man and woman". Those who actually remember the issues in the 2008 election, will remember that Obama's stance was that it should be up to individual states and wants to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, despite his personal view.
Miss California claimed that she was answering to "her God" and not to the people. She didn't want to "offend anybody" with her answer: she was simply trying to be "biblically correct". What's more important? Biblically correct, or politically correct? She claimed that her not winning the pageant was what "God wanted for her". Apparently, god wanted her to run around defending her hateful statements to national media organizations. I guess that's better than being Miss USA - I'm sure it pays more.
How the fuck did California end up with such a bible thumping moron as our representative in the pageant?
The crux of Miss California's defense is that she feels she should never have to compromise herself - no matter what is at stake, and that no one else should have to either. I think it's obvious that we all have to make compromises in our lives. For instance, I didn't want to pay taxes that supported the war during Bush's Presidential terms, but I had no choice: I had to compromise.
Wake up, Miss California. The world is not all sunshine and roses and heterosexual couples with stay-at-home-moms breastfeeding their 2.5 children and walking their dog outside of their white picket fence.
Is Perez right? Should she have maintained a more politically neutral stance in order to unite viewers? Or should she have boldly stated her political opinion, no matter how hateful, bigoted, and rude?
