The Haiti earthquake's brought out a number of massive campaigns to raise money for the victims who will clearly be affected for some time. Susan Porritt's just launched a female-orientated fund raising idea.
In the same vein as the ad campaign that prodded you into not only giving money but also thinking by showing a picture of third world water source and asking the question: How much would you pay not to drink this water? For me the answer started as 'a fiver?' and then slowly went up the more I thought about the reality.
Ladies Don't Lunch does the same kind of thing: it reminds you of what you do have. It sounds so horrendously cliché to say "things that we take for granted" but really how often do you look at your lunch or Diet Coke break and say "Hurrah that I live in a society with lunch and Diet Coke breaks which have been sent to me from the men in white tank-tops on my television?"
The fundraiser on the 12th of February not only has a poster with gorgeous typography and a cupcake, but encourages you to skip lunch and donate the money to charity. It's a brilliant idea, thought up by Susan Porritt and you can add your name over on Just Giving. This is not just a repetitive and ineffective Facebook group to show mild support of people surviving, but it makes you think.
