This past Friday, Kathy Griffin had a poolside pap smear.
Yes, as in she layed by the pool in front of a group of people (and TV cameras) and had Pap smear for her show My Life on the D-List to raise awareness about cervical cancer. And, naturally, she did it on on top of a banner that said “Tell Cancer to Suck It”, in a bikini and heels, and with a bedazzled area. Down there.
Kathy’s publiscist explained that Kathy received the “important test” in hopes that “every woman will see how easy it is to get this done”. She also noted that the reason Kathy chose to “bedazzle” her bits for this occasion was “so it can be as 'va-beautiful' as it 'va-can'”.
Obviously, this, er, event has been compared to that of Katie Couric’s on-air colonoscopy – and as The Washington Post notes, “Couric's celebrity colonoscopy was credited with a spike in the number of colonoscopies performed over the next few months.”
Hopefully the Griffin’s poolside Pap will result in more smears being done (and not just an increase of bedazzled vaginas). In my opinion, it's incredibly refreshing to have someone like Kathy Griffin highlighting the importance of getting regular smears, rather than just the tragic legacy of Jade Goody.
Goody’s death did greatly increase awareness of cervical cancer and it's reported that in in October 2009 the number of women aged between 25 and 64 going for smear tests in the United Kingdom had grown by 12% during the previous year. This, of course, is amazing. However, my feeling is that women going to get tested should be a proactive thing, not a reactive measure that is done out of fear.
(However, I of course realize that no matter the reason, it's important for women to get tested.)
Kathy making getting a pap smear look almost leisurely, I think, is a good move. Of course it’s not fun, of course it’s a bit uncomfortable, but for fuck sake, suck it up and go get a smear done.
And, in the word’s of Kathy: TELL CANCER TO SUCK IT.
