Kathryn Bigelow's Oscar Win Kicks Off International Women's Day

By Cate Sevilla

Today is International Women’s Day, and what better news to wake up to, then Kathryn Bigelow becoming the first woman to win best director at the Oscars, and to also have her film, The Hurt Locker, win best picture.

Of course, the interesting twist to this story is that Kathryn Bigelow beat out her ex-husband, James “King of the World” Cameron, who is the mastermind and director of the film Avatar. (Which, by the way, I just think of as Pochahantas.)

However, this is not the first time Bigelow has made history, as last month, she also became the first woman to win a BAFTA for Best Director – again beating out James Cameron.

However, I’m sure Bigelow and Cameron alike would appreciate the media  focusing on both party's art and less on this being a “check mate” to their personal drama and divorce. Also, they were married for four years like 20 years ago. Move on, people!

Perhaps beating out your ex to win an Oscar is the best revenge ever, but I’m guessing Bigelow would like us all to make this about her, her talent, and her incredible film - and not about Cameron or Avatar.

The Hurt Locker won six Oscars last night, and one of our all time favourite actresses, Sandra Bullock, who also just won a Razzie for Worst Actress for her role in All About Steve, received the Best Actress award for the first time in her long, highly successful career for leading role in The Blind Side

In her acceptance speech, she spoke about how she shared it with the women she was nominated along side with (“my lover, Meryl Streep”) and spoke beautifully about her own mother, and the mothers who “take care of the babies and the children no matter where they come from”.

All around, between Bullock, Mo’Nique and Bigelow’s wins last night, I feel like the celebrations of International Women’s Day started long before those of us in the UK even woke up.

Too true (and the funny thing is, even Cameron said the same...!).

Ahhh, it was beautiful! I actually didn't watch the Oscars, but I came in just in time for Sandra Bullock's speech and the Best Director award. I whooped so loud when Kathryn Bigelow won I woke up one of my roommates. As an aspiring director it's absolutely wonderful to know that times they are a-changin'!
