Helen Mirren says Female Jurors on Rape Cases are "Sexually Jealous" of Victim

By Cate Sevilla

Helen Mirren makes it really difficult to like her or want to go see her films when every time she opens up her mouth about rape, she says something completely and utterly offensive.

Earlier this year the 60-whatever-year-old pissed a lot of people off by saying that rape "isn't always criminal" and that, for example, under those "non-violent circumstances" people like Mike Tyson should be considered rapists.

Now Mirren is saying that women shouldn't be allowed on the jury panel of a rape case as female jealousy will prevent them from fairly evaluating the case. Oh yes. She went there.

In a rape case the courts - in defence of a man - would select as many women as they could for the jury, because women go against women.

Whether in a deep-seated animalistic way, going back billions of years, or from a sense of tribal jealousy or just antagonism, I don't know.

But other women on a rape case would say she was asking for it. The only reason I can think of is that they're sexually jealous.

Yeah, I don't know about you, but when I find out someone has been raped, I get this uncontrollable sense of JEALOUSY. And then I mutter something about how they "must have been asking for it".

I think you'll all join me in joyously raising my middle finger at the *lovely* Dame Helen Mirren and shouting a hearty FUCK YOU.

I really don't understand where all this Helen Mirren, Spokeswoman of Womankind crap is coming from. I understand that she has as much right to speak about her experiences and opinions as anyone else, but when that's damaging to legal process and victim's rights, it's rather worrying. I can't ask her to shut up, but I really wish she would...

I'm didn't read the "isn't always criminal" piece in GQ (note to editor of BB: I think you should link the source--not the website quoting the source), but I did read the piece where Dame Mirren speaks about "sexually jealous" female jurors. My question: is it true that defense attorneys attempt to select female jurors for rape trials because statistics prove that women are more likely to acquit rapists? Thanks for your time. I understood where she was coming from with all cases not being sent to trial. I don't know that I completely agree, but I see where she was coming from. I disagree with the jealously thing. I would think that more women would sympathize with a rape victim than a man... I would have to read the whole article to try and figure out where she was coming from. Even if I disagree with her point I still respect her as a strong woman and respect her for stating her belief and speaking out about her own experience.
