May 16th marked the beginning of National Smile Month, a four-week awareness campaign to remind you to brush your teeth and look after your ‘smile’.
According to the British Dental Health Foundation, not caring for your little toothy-pegs can contribute to the development of Dun Dun DUN!!! ‘Heart disease!’, ‘strokes!’, ‘diabetes!’ and ‘low birth weight babies!’. You heard it right, bad dental hygiene can kill you, and I didn’t even get that from the Daily Mail, repeat: This is not The Daily Mail!
While the idea of National Smile Month makes me think of those twat builders who tell you to smile, with added scaremongering, it is important not to overlook the core of what the campaign is aiming for: good oral hygiene. I mean, who wants to have nasty breath, expensive fillings or teeth removed?
While I am not one for over-using the smile (I prefer a pout myself), I decided to get with the spirit of things, and give the Oolitt eXcel Tongue Cleanser, £3.49, a go. It’s rare you’ll find someone skanky enough to not clean their teeth, very few of us bother with the tongue, which is equally important to keep clean.
The Oolitt eXcel Tongue Cleanser is essentially a loop of plastic on a stick with which you scrape the spittey, foodey filth from your tongue. Sound disgusting? Well, it is, but better out than in, eh! Despite making me gag just a little bit, I was left with that ‘just-brushed’ feeling all day. I may not be walking around beaming like Same Difference, but I must say, I have become quite the devoted tongue cleaner!
